The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication

The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication educates students to master, excel in, and provide leadership for the future of media. A curriculum that provides strong technical skills while remaining steadfastly committed to a liberal arts foundation means that our graduates are ready for the jobs out there today, but are also able to adapt to new conditions in the years and decades ahead.

The school was named in 2013 in honor of Lawrence Herbert ’51, inventor of the Pantone Matching System and former chairman and CEO of Pantone, Inc. Mr. Herbert’s transformative commitment allows the Herbert School to innovate and keep pace with a rapidly changing media landscape.


  • 1,108 undergraduate students (Fall 2016)
  • Roughly 70 percent of the Herbert School’s fall 2016 incoming undergraduate class hailed from outside of New York State.
  • Journalism, Public Relations, and Film Studies and Production were among the top 10 undergraduate majors in fall 2016.
  • The Herbert School’s fall 2014 first-year, full-time student retention rate averaged 89 percent, the highest of Hofstra’s schools and colleges.


  • Professors are internationally recognized scholars, published authors and veteran industry professionals, including Emmy Award-winners and Fulbright Scholars.

  • LinkedIn ranked Hofstra as the No. 2 school for media professionals based on alumni career outcomes.
  • The Department of Radio, TV, Film is one of just 19 programs selected nationwide as one of Variety magazine’s 2016 “Best Showbiz Programs.”
  • The Sports Media concentration in the BA in Journalism program educates future producers, writers, reporters and anchors for this growing and important field.
  • Four students were selected to participate in NBCUniversal’s 2016 Summer Olympics Internship Program.
  • WRHU-88.7 FM won the prestigious National Association of Broadcasters Marconi Radio Award as the non-commercial station of the year in 2014, and was a finalist in 2016. The Princeton Review ranked WRHU the #1 college radio station in the U.S. in 2015 and 2016.

  • The Herbert School’s Sco in Rome! and Hofstra in LA signature programs bring together students from multiple areas of study – journalism, television, film, public relations, radio, and media studies–to experience the national and international media landscape like never before.
  • Hofstra became the first university worldwide to partner with Hitachi Kokusai Electric, incorporating the company’s innovative 4K-technology cameras into the school’s broadcast curriculum.


  • NewsHub – a state-of-the-art converged digital newsroom and collaborative space.
  • Studio A – a three-story 3,750 square foot studio.
  • Production studios with 4K/UltraHD cameras.
  • Multimedia studio and control room for music, audio and radio production – this multifunctional space serves as an on-air training classroom and provides students with the ability to mix live music and radio talk shows.
  • WRHU a campus/community radio station, which broadcasts worldwide via and on 88.7 FM to Long Island, New York City and parts of Connecticut.
  • Audio production, sound mixing and color correction suite for the Film and TV programs – utilizing the latest software, this space provides students with a place to complete high end finishing work, watch dailies, and screen projects.
