Hofstra Journalism and PR students receive NYWIC scholarships
Lawrence Herbert School of Communication’s Vanessa Powell and Elisa Tang are among 18 students selected to receive a 2014 New York Women in Communications Foundation Scholarship, awarded on the basis of academic excellence, need and a demonstrated commitment to the field of communications.
Elisa and Vanessa will be recognized on stage with their fellow scholarship recipients at the New York Women in Communications Matrix Awards Luncheon on Monday, April 28, 2014, in New York City. This year’s luncheon will be emceed by Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb, co-hosts of the fourth hour of NBC’s TODAY, and will feature Matrix Award winners and presenters, including Queen Latifah, Christiane Amanpour, and Gloria Steinem.
Vanessa Powell, a public relations major, received the Hearst Scholarship, awarded to a student with a demonstrated commitment to a career in magazines (editorial or ad sales) or digital media. Aspiring to work in the fashion industry, Vanessa interned at Cameo PR, a boutique fashion PR agency, as a freshman and is currently still working for the company. She has also interned in the fashion editorial department of REDBOOK magazine and the PR department of Ralph Lauren Global. For three consecutive semesters, Vanessa has written for CollegeFashionista.com‘s style column, and is currently brand ambassador for ASOS.com at Hofstra. Through her volunteer work for Teen Vogue events, she received a feature in the July & August 2013 issues of the magazine, as a part of their national “Safe Driving Campaign.” Currently, she is doing freelance styling and assistant editorial work for Better Homes & Gardens and Shop Smart magazines by Consumer Reports, and recently started her own style blog called The Styleness.
Elisa Tang is a junior at Hofstra University studying Broadcast Journalism. Throughout her three years at Hofstra, she has been involved in various activities both on and off campus, including her work as a Production intern at MTV Digital and her leadership responsibilities as an Assistant News Director at WRHU 88.7FM. Elisa has worked as a Contributing Writer for TheCelebrityCafé.com, a Media and Communications Volunteer at the 2012 Presidential Debate, the Producer of her original talk show, “Inspiration and Sass,” for WRHU’s A League of Our Own, the host of Hofstra’s Morning Wake-Up Call, and a writer for Hofstra Today. Elisa has also served as a volunteer for the 2012 Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Festival in Manhattan, where she reported on the event and interviewed various singers, organization leaders, and celebrities in attendance. She is honored to be the recipient of the 2014 New York Women in Communications scholarship and a new member of New York Women in Communications.
The New York Women in Communications Foundation, a public charity founded in 2000, exists to help a younger sisterhood successfully enter the world of communications with financial support, professional guidance and ongoing friendship. An arm of New York Women in Communications, the Foundation awards scholarships and provides educational programs for women, whether just beginning or embarking on a transition in their careers.
