Social media and technology have shaped the world dramatically over the past few years: how we work, how we socialize, how we advocate, and how we understand the world around us. The Hofstra Cultural Center, in collaboration with Hofstra’s MA Program in Industrial/Organizational Psychology; Department of Journalism, Media Studies, and Public Relations; and the Hofstra Career Center, is hosting a symposium that will examine how to effectively incorporate social media into our daily lives.
“Social Media: Transforming Communication at Work and in the Public Sphere” will be held Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017, from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. in various locations on Hofstra’s South Campus. The free, daylong seminar will draw speakers and experts to discuss the role of social media in recruitment and the workplace, as well as its role in the delivery of news, the formation of public opinion, and how we process information and understand issues. 10 a.m. Social Media for Advocacy and Persuasion, Guthart Cultural Center Theater, Axinn Library, South Campus
This panel will cover how social media can drive policy and persuasion. The panelists will also discuss the implications that social media has and will have as a tool for advocacy.
11:15 a.m. Keynote Address, Fortunoff Theater, Monroe Lecture Center, South Campus
Dr. Sherry Turkle, the Abby Rockefeller Mauze Professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will discuss the effects of rapidly advancing technology on human behavior. Turkle is also the author of The Second Self: Computers and the Human Spirit and Alone Together: Why We Expect More Form Technology and Less From Each Other.
3 p.m. The New Social Media: Protecting Yourself From Fake News, Guthart Cultural Center Theater, Axinn Library, South Campus
Dr. Kelly Fincham, Associate Professor of Journalism, Media Studies, and Public Relations, and Claire Wardle, Executive Director at the nonprofit First Draft, will hold a workshop and discussion on verifying information on social media.
4:30 p.m. Social Media, the Law and Hiring, Room 106, Calkins Hall, South Campus
Jackson Lewis attorney Ian Bogaty, Columbia University’s Tamar Senderowitz, and Hofstra industrial organization psychology professors Comila Shahani-Denning and Kevin Nolan will discuss research, practice and legal issues related to social media in hiring.
6:30 p.m. Managing Your Social Media Presence, Room 106, Calkins Hall, South Campus
The Hofstra Career Center will guide job applicants in their social media branding. This interactive session also features a recruiter from one of Hofstra’s employer partners, who will provide an employer’s perspective on how to stand out in an applicant pool.
